Purpose of the Role:
 
Background.
 
The existing CHI Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering departments will merge in the next two years to form the base for a new Healthcare Technology Department (HTD). This new department will provide the typical range of services associated with the practice of medical physics and clinical engineering, including financial stewardship of the medical equipment. However, this new department will also develop new services to support the digital transformation of CHI including integration of medical equipment into ICT systems and providing leadership to accelerate the adoption of innovations afforded by the new digital environment.
 
The new HTD will provide technical and clinical support for the diverse and complex medical equipment in the different clinical areas of the new hospital, and across all the existing CHI sites. Clinical areas supported include, but are not limited to: theatres, intensive care units, cardiology, imaging, paediatric oncology, nephrology, neurology, ophthalmology, the central decontamination unit and laboratories.
 
As the complexity, interconnectivity and interdependence of medical equipment continues to grow, HTD staff will work more closely in partnership with other departments within CHI, such as those supporting and overseeing ICT, Hospital Networks and Estates.
 
Particular Purpose of the Post.
 
Trainee post ideally suited to a recent graduate or person with some work experience. Comprehensive training will be provided and staff will rotate through a number of specialist teams within the HTD getting experience on a wide variety of equipment.  Experience will be gained on maintenance and preventative maintenance of medical equipment, its clinical application on patients, setting up of complex equipment in PICU and Theatre, specifications and tendering. Training will also be provided on transporting critically ill patients on aircraft and helicopters and involve working closely with the Irish Aircore. The trainee will get to work in 4 different location Crumlin/Temple street/Connolly/Tallaght UCC ensuring a good variety of work. Further education is encouraged.
 
The Clinical Engineering Technician, will work as part of the HTD providing Clinical Engineering and Technical support to all hospital medical equipment including diagnostic, analytical, therapeutic, surgical, medical decontamination and life support systems in Children’s Health Ireland Group as directed by the local reporting relationship.
 
Having due regard to service needs, the successful candidates will liaise with other staff and grades within and outside the service/line manager as necessitated to ensure that the medical equipment is operated and maintained so as to support safe, effective, and efficient delivery of clinical services.

1. Professional Qualifications, Experience etc.
 
A. (i)  Hold as a minimum a recognised qualification at National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ), Level 7 or higher, in one of the following engineering disciplines:
 
Electronic Engineering,
Electrical Engineering,
Instrument Physics,
Industrial Instrumentation,
Applied Physics,
Mechanical Engineering,
Mechtronic Engineering,
Biomedical or Clinical Engineering,
Medica Physics;
OR
 
Hold a recognised qualification at least equivalent to one of the above;
