Telehealth Working Group

Dear Colleagues

It is proposed to establish a BEAI working group on Telehealth, and in particular, Remote Patient Monitoring.  This will be fundamental to hospital avoidance.

This is a rapidly developing area of special interest for Clinical Engineers.  Many of you will already be working on Telehealth solutions.

There are 3 broad areas of telehealth: Virtual clinics, Remote Monitoring and On-line therapies.

Remote monitoring will refer to:

1. Monitoring patients at home via data upload;

2. Monitoring patients at home with real-time automated alerts;

3. Monitoring patients for a defined period at home with data collected on the device for later review;

4. Self-management devices;

5. Self-management apps;

6. Symptom checker uploads;

7. New approaches in-hospital monitoring.

Until some momentum is built up, it will not be clear how this Working Group will develop, but I expect it will be an information sharing platform and an expert body to provide opinions to the HSE on new initiatives.

It is important that as many Clinical Engineers as possible area aware of Remote monitoring initiatives and processes, so that we can support increased capacity in the health service and support quality care.

People with a genuine interest or experience in implementation of remote monitoring should contact me at meabhsmith@beaumont.ie.

The Working Group will do business by WebEx meetings and email.

Kind regards,

Meabh Smith
