Foreword

Welcome to the Summer 2022 issue of Spectrum Journal
– we have a host of interesting articles in this issue, covering
everything from safety to new technologies, maternity scanning services and physiotherapy.

In our Focus section, Pat Healy – Associate Director, Safety Health and Quality at Turner and Townsend – offers an overview
of compliance safety measures in the Project Supervisor Design Process. Plus, Tim Doherty - Equipment SME Q.C. Laboratory JNJ VisionCare Ireland -
provides some thoughts on whether routine electrical safety testing of medical equipment by hospital clinical engineering
departments is still required and proposes an approach that can be supported by relevant literature and guidance documents.

Elsewhere, Rasmus á Rogvi – who works as a medical advisor at Radiometer (Copenhagen, Denmark) – examines transcutaneous monitoring for
managing patients using non-invasive ventilation;

Matthew Clarke - Technical Service Manager at Irish Hospital Supplies - offers an overview of the influence of HF on
monitors; and Kate McDonald - Senior Clinical Engineer at St. Vincent’s University Hospital – discusses estimating 3D
kinematics of the human body from noisy wearable sensor measurements using a biomechanically-constrained probabilistic estimator.

On page 22 Cathal Flannery - Senior Biomedical Engineer, Cork University Hospital - reports on the latest endoscope traceability services
expansion at CUH, Bantry and Mallow General Hospital. And turn to page 26 where Maighread Gallagher – formerly the National Maternity Hospital and now Principal
Clinical Engineer in Letterkenny University Hospital - offers a report on the ultrasound scanning services for women throughout the hospital,
where over 25,000 ultrasound scans are carried out each year.

In latest research, Seán McMahon - Director of mdcl and currently working with his colleagues A. Power & M. Fottrell to bring an electroactive polymer
medical solution to market - reviews the electroactive polymer medical applications landscape. In the area of physiotherapy, Lucinda Edge
- Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist, Home FIRsT (Frailty Intervention and Response Team), Emergency Department, St James’s Hospital – highlights the findings of grip
strength assessment amongst older people presenting to the ED.

And finally I have submitted an overview of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), also called Terry Syndrome, which is a disorderof the developing retina that primarily
affects underweight preterm infants on page 36.

Looking ahead, we are working towards our upcoming BEAI Annual Scientific Conference taking place in the Aviva Stadium on 30th September with MDI Medical as our Gold Sponsor.
We hope to see you all there!
Thanks, once again, to Frank Kelly and his team for compiling the content for this issue. Please don’t forget to get in touch
if you would like to contribute to a future issue.
Wishing you all the best,
Eoghan Hayden
