Foreword

Welcome to the Autumn 2022 issue of Spectrum Journal. Once again, we have collated a selection of informative and

educational articles from our peers and we are delighted to share them with you all.

Our Focus Section for this issue is on the theme of volunteering and humanitarian efforts. Rosemarie Hayden - Area Director

and Project Lead at Maynooth University Ukraine Project, Co. Kildare Irish Red Cross - looks at the history of the Irish Red Cross and discusses the important work underway today with the organisation.

Ronan Greany, Chartered Accountant and a member of Dalkey Cardiac First Responders, takes time to discuss the role of CFRs and encourages readers to contribute in some way to the work of volunteers responding to medical emergencies.

Elsewhere, on the topics of innovation and digital healthcare, Meabh Smith, Health Technology Advisor at Beaumont Hospital,

writes about the importance of including remote patient monitoring in our health service; while Noel Murphy, Biomedical engineer at Health Innovation Hub Ireland, writes about the appointment of a new director at Health Innovation Hub Ireland and the success the company is enjoying.

Meanwhile, Dean Walsh, Clinical Engineer at Tallaght University Hospital, describes the advantages of implementing a 3D printer into the Clinical Engineering department in Tallaght Hospital. We also have James Kelleher, Orthopaedic Sales Specialist Trauma at Tekno Surgical, review Stryker’s SPY system, which enables real-time visualization of tissue perfusion throughout the body.

On page 22, Emma Christian and Brian Clancy from the Department of Medical Physics & Clinical Engineering at Beaumont Hospital, report on inhaled nitric oxide therapy, a therapy presenting hope for very sick patients and challenges for clinical engineers. On page 28 Malu Chandran, Senior Clinical Engineering Technician at Cork University Hospital, outlines the crucial role of Biomedical Engineering in delivering high quality Point of Care testing services at Cork University.

On page 37, Lukas Gokas, Clinical Engineer Tallaght University Hospital, and Leighton Curry, Head of Clinical Engineering Services, Tallaght University Hospital, offer some insight into Tallaght University Hospital’s Reeves Day Surgery. In addition, John Adlington, Principal Clinical Engineering Technician in the Clinical Engineering Department at Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore, discusses with Liam Hackett (Chief Clinical Engineering Technician and National Medical Device Community Advisor) and Aidan O’Toole (Senior Clinical Engineering Technician) the responsibility assigned to the Midlands Community Clinical Engineering department to equip these facilities and the subsequent response required as the pandemic evolved.

Looking at the important issue of health & wellness, Motty Varghese – Sleep Physiologist and Behavioural Sleep Therapist, Sleep Therapy Clinic – shines a light on the importance of sleep for clinical engineers, and the factors to focus on to optimize it.

In a very personal and interesting article, Jim Davenport, the Former Head of Clinical Engineering at Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children Crumlin, Dublin, looks back over his 40-year career and offers a candid account of how he has tackled the transition that comes with retirement. Our roving reporter, Kieran Healy, also speaks with Dr. Paddy McGowan PhD, Retired Head of Clinical Engineering Letterkenny Hospital.

Don’t miss Brian Kearney’s (Professional Development Officer, BEAI) report on Ireland’s bid to host the World Congress on

Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering in 2028 – see page 18.

Finally, we look forward to seeing you all at the BEAI 25th Annual Scientific Conference on September 30th in the Aviva Stadium, Dublin. I would like to thank MDI Medical, our Gold Sponsor, for their support and also thanks to all our other sponsors who have made this event possible. Turn to page 10 for a sneak peek at the programme for the day.

Thanks, once again, to Frank Kelly and his team for another jam-packed issue of Spectrum Journal. We encourage you all to contribute to this publication so please get in touch with Frank with any queries or topics for consideration.

Wishing you all the best,

Eoghan Hayden
