Foreword

Welcome to the Spring 2023 Issue of Spectrum Journal. After a very successful BEAI Annual Scientific Conference, we have been busy compiling this issue, which is packed with interesting features and reports on a range of topics, including: the status of medical records in Irish healthcare; equity, diversity and inclusion in the workplace; and healthcare simulation in training.

Our extended Focus Section concentrates on the theme of Education from a host of different perspectives; from the student experience right through to the educator. Michelle Roe discusses the role that the BEAI education committee has on its members, while on page 14, Professor Dara Byrne offers an insight into her role and the importance of healthcare simulation for individual and teams’ education and training. On the student side, Holly Bale - a Transition Year student at Coláiste de Lacy, Ashbourne, Co. Meath - outlines her experience interning in St. Vincent’s University Hospital; Megan Doyle – fourth year biomedical engineering student from DCU – discusses working with automated infusion systems during her internship with B. Braun Medical; and Kristine O’Dwyer – 4th Year Clinical Technology Student, TUS Midwest – reports on her experience at the BEAI’s Annual Scientific Conference. Examining perspectives on further education for Clinical Engineers, Sean Cournane describes UCD’s Centre for Physics in Health and Medicine (CPHM); Mairead Dennehy (TUS) discusses pathways for further education for Clinical Engineers; and Seamus McGarrell gives a student perspective on the TUS Post Graduate programme.

Elsewhere, Dara Keeley examines the status of medical records in Irish healthcare; Shauna Rahman and Seán O’Driscoll present an overview of the importance of equity, diversity and inclusion in the workplace; and Eoghan Hayden offers an update on the ongoing work in Zambia with the EQUALS Initiative.

Finally, we enjoyed another very successful BEAI Annual Scientific Conference at the end of 2022 and Kate McDonald reports from the event within this issue.

Thanks, as always, to Frank Kelly and all of the contributors in this issue for producing another informative and educational issue of Spectrum Journal. If you would like to be part of the next issue of Spectrum Journal please contact Frank – all ideas welcome!

Wishing you all the best,

Eoghan Hayden
