Welcome to the Spectrum Journal spring edition 2018. This edition is filled with interesting articles, news and events that we hope will keep you up to date with the latest in biomedical and clinical engineering. We have included a selection of photos and a brief commentary on our 22nd Annual Scientific Conference, which took place in the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Dublin. The event was a huge success, with record numbers of attendees and exhibitors, and a great line up of speakers and panellists to discuss the hot topics and future challenges facing our profession and healthcare system. I’d like to thank everyone who participated in the recently circulated survey, which focused on the experience of last year’s conference and your thoughts on this year’s conference.
I am pleased to announce that this year’s 23rd BEAI Annual Scientific Conference will take place on Friday, October 5, 2018 in the Clayton Hotel Galway.
It is with regret that I announce our esteemed colleague and long-standing member, Meabh Smith, has stepped down from the executive committee. Meabh has served as previous chairperson, secretary and education officer of the BEAI in recent years. I would like to thank Meabh for all her hard work and commitment with the BEAI, often behind the scenes, and look forward to working with Meabh in the future. I am delighted to welcome Andrea Fottrell as our new education officer, and Kieran Healy, has taken up the role of secretary. Both of these positions will be up for election at our next Annual General Meeting, which is scheduled to take place on Thursday, May 3, 2018 at 10am in Tallaght Hospital, Dublin.
We have plenty of education sessions and lectures lined up for 2018, under the auspices of our new education officer Andrea Fottrell. These sessions are often supported by the National Health & Social Care Professions (HSCP) office and can often be in conjunction with other HSCPs – please log on to our website to see the full list of events for 2018, including details on how to register.
As per our strategic plan, we are continuing to progress with the implementation of registration for all clinical engineers and have produced a draft document for review.
Once we reach the appropriate stage, we will publicise this for consultation with our members.
Our website is currently undergoing a redesign and upgrade, which Oleg and his team are working on. We plan on utilising the website as a go-to resource for our members and will be including a module for recording your continued professional development (CPD) in the near future.
The BEAI are currently looking for people to work on our various subgroups, who, in turn, feed back into the Executive Committee. Two such subgroups are Education and Spectrum – if you have an interest in joining either of these, please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org As always, keep an eye on our social media and website for news and upcoming events that may be of interest to you.
I would like to offer my condolences to the family of Professor Herbert Voigt, who sadly passed away suddenly on the January 25, 2018. Prof Voigt was president of the IFMBE from 2009-2012 and the IUPESM from 2012-2015 and a great supporter of our association in Ireland. May he rest in peace.
Finally, I hope you enjoy reading the spring edition of the Spectrum Journal and hope to see you at one of our events shortly.
