Foreword

Welcome to the Spectrum Journal Spring Edition 2019.

Annual Scientific Conference 2019

This edition contains a summary of our Annual Scientific Conference which took place in Galway on October 5, 2018. The theme Clinical Engineering – Challenges and New Horizons encouraged plenty of discussion, with good attendance from both exhibitors and professionals from hospitals and the healthcare technology industry. Take some time to view the many photos and read all about the conference on page 36. I would like to acknowledge the support from our Gold Sponsor ‘Aquilant’ and all of Damien’s team, who contributed greatly to the event.

We are delighted to confirm that this year’s scientific conference will take place in Cork at the Silver Springs Hotel, Friday, October 4, 2019. Visit our website, beai.ie for more details and for exhibition opportunities. We look forward to opening the invitation for abstracts in the near future.

New appointments

I would like to introduce our new Executive Development Administrator, Barbara Conway, who joined us in November last to help the Executive Committee progress the organisation's strategic plan and keep true to our vision. She brings a depth of practical hands-on commercial experience and has already made a significant contribution with a full education calendar, a comprehensive suite of governance documentation and is working closely with all the sub committees to drive their agendas forward. Andrea Fottrell, our Education/CPD Officer, has decided to step down from her role and Rob Vavasour has now taken on this role. Thank you to Andrea for all her guidance and work over the years, and welcome to Rob on his new role. On that note, I would also like to welcome and introduce the following officers and wish them luck in their new roles.

• John Adlington – Membership Officer

• Peter Grainger – Professional Development Officer.

Website

Keep an eye on our website, for training dates, news and events. There is ongoing work taking place with our IT subgroup and Oleg, as our website administrator, on upgrading the website to ensure it is a valuable resource for our members. Keep an eye on the website for new developments over the coming months.

Social media

And, don’t forget our LinkedIn Page and Twitter handle BEAI_Ireland – we try and post as much as we can via these platforms. We are always delighted to get details of your activities – so drop us a line and let us know what you are up to – in-service days, new product development, professional training. Tag the BEAI to spread your potential audience.

Certification

Peter Grainger, Professional Development Officer, is working with the IFMBE to develop a certification process that meets both the International standards of the IFMBE and also CORU’s national standards.

IFMBE

Peter is also busy representing us at an international level, on the Membership Committee of the IFMBE and also regularly contributing to white papers presented to the WHO. He is also Co-Chair of the Membership Committee and Chair of the Global Health Technology Regulation Project with the Clinical Engineering Division. We are always looking for people to contribute articles, news or any other relevant information for our Spectrum Journal. Please contact our Spectrum lead Frank Kelly at spectrum@beai.ie for further information.

I hope you enjoy this edition and best wishes for the rest of 2019,
