Overview of role:
Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist with the support of medical, nursing, paramedical and clinical support staff in the application of technology
  • Assist with the implementation of the procedures that ensure the day to day scientific and technical quality of all instruments and procedures
  • Analyse computer and equipment generated data and present it in a form suitable for clinical interpretation
  • Participate in research, development and innovation as appropriate
  • Assist with the provision of maintenance services for electro medical equipment in respect of its functional, electronic, electrical and mechanical aspects to a standard of safety, accuracy and reliability consistent with its function and with professional standards
  • Assist with advising on the selection, specification, acceptance testing and safety of new equipment and installations
  • Assist with supervision of other staff as required
  • Provide in-house training as required, and develop relevant skills as trainer/educator
  • Undertake courses, education and training programmes to the level required for professional development and performance of duties
  • Develop, as required by Head of Clinical Engineering Services / Line Manager, specialist areas of interest within the fields of Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering
  • Assist with efficient management of the hospital's budget in relevant areas of responsibility
  • Participate in academic activities as per the hospital's teaching agreements with Trinity College Dublin and with academic institutions and in other academic activities as required and directed by the Head of Department
  • Participate, as required, in the Departments out of normal working hours On Call system
  • Provide the Department’s administration with such records of his/her work as are deemed to be necessary
  • Contribute as required to the development of the Department’s policies and services, where required, through participation in the work of, and contributing to the management of, the appropriate operational teams and groups
  • To maintain close liaison with the Principal Clinical Engineering Technician / Equipment Library Officer in the day to day running of the Medical Equipment Library (MEL)
  • Maintenance of computerised inventory of equipment in the MEL
  • Responding to telephone requests for equipment under all conditions or urgency and keeping a record of all requests
  • Ensuring equipment is cleaned and decontaminated by ward staff before being returned to the library
  • Inspection and functional check of returned equipment using existing guidelines
  • Recharging of battery powered equipment while in the MEL
  • Delivery and collection of medical equipment within the Hospital, ensuring that all accessories are complete
  • Advising the Principal Clinical Engineering Technician / Equipment Library Officer of any equipment issues, which occur
  • Reporting teaching needs, as they arise, to the Principal Clinical Engineering Technician / Equipment Library Officer
  • Assist with the co-ordination and implementation of the preventative schedule maintenance and safety programmes
  • To attend appropriate  education and training programmes
  • The holder of the post will be encouraged to obtain Professional Engineering Registration Status
  • All activities shall be carried out in a professional manner at least in accordance with the Engineers Ireland code of ethics
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned by the Head of Clinical Engineering Services / Line Manager

Qualifications & Experience required
Must have:

  • Possess a Technician Diploma in Electronic Engineering

Or

  • Technician Diploma in Electrical Engineering

Or

  • Technician Diploma in Mechanical Engineering

Or

  • National Diploma in Engineering/Electronics/Instrumentation

Or

  • A recognised qualification at least equivalent thereto

And

  • Possess the requisite knowledge and ability, for proper discharge of the duties of the post

Desirable:       Previous experience in a Clinical Engineering Environment.

Reward & Recognition

  • Remuneration is in accordance with the Department of Health Consolidated Salary Scales, grade code 3161.
  • The appointment is full time, fixed term contract internship role for 9 months.
  • The annual leave entitlement is 27 working days per year. The leave year runs from 1st April to the 31st of March each year.
  • Normal working hours are 37 worked over 5 days. Your contracted hours of work are liable to change between the hours of 8 am to 8 pm over 7 days to meet the requirements for extended day services in accordance with the terms of the Framework Agreement.
